Katie Sewell

Katie Sewell

Position: Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator

Involved since: June 2008

Bio Information:

Katie has always had a desire to give a voice to the voiceless. From her experiences growing up, to her time spent in Chiapas, Mexico, to marching in protests for human rights, joining with people in their struggles has been a calling. Seeing and experiencing poverty first hand, Katie understands the systematic and multidimensional nature of poverty. This understanding has driven her to be an advocate and to share her knowledge and story in order to impact the lives of others.

Her role as the Advocacy and Outreach Coordinator allows her to network with and speak to various groups such as churches, college groups, schools, and local organizations. She was drawn to The 1010 Project because of the organization’s commitment to empowerment. The poor are the experts on poverty, and The 1010 Project values listening to their voices by building relationships with them.

Katie is currently working on a dual degree at the University of Denver – a Master of Social Work and a Master of Divinity. She will graduate from both programs in June of 2009. Her hope is to continue using her voice to be an advocate for and partner with the poor.

Along with her studies and work at The 1010 Project, Katie also works at a transitional housing community in Denver, where she is a family counselor and loves working with the children. Aside from work and studies, Katie enjoys camping, hiking, climbing, and meeting new people. She is always up for sharing stories and life over a cup of fresh coffee!
