Friend in Leadership: Alice and Fred Afwai (The 1010 Project’s Country Director in Kenya)
Partner since: June 2003 Statement of Purpose: To enhance education among the less fortunate and orphans in the community. Candlelight helps children learn to read and write as well as providing them with technical skills/training. Needs/Beneficiaries: The poor are oftentimes overlooked, but Fred and Alice Afwai have decided to take in many orphans on their own, using what little means they have available to provide for impoverished children. Income-Generating Activities:
Impacts: Candlelight School has over 300 students, half of whom are orphans. An ambitious food program provides hot meals for students; in many cases, this might be the only food they will receive for the day. Testimonial: I have seen job opportunities created for the jobless, health improved for the ailing, and children happily learning in the schools that we partner with [Candlelight and others].
