Friend in Leadership: Michael Nyangi

Partner since: February 2006

Statement of Purpose: To engage in activities geared towards poverty eradication and empowering people in the low-income brackets through the scheme of a micro-credit revolving fund in the Kibera slum of Nairobi.

Needs/Beneficiaries: LOMORO provides financial services to those who cannot access traditional banks and capital flows due to a lack of collateral. There are many people in the slums of Nairobi for whom even small loans can make a world of difference in the struggle against poverty.

Income-Generating Activities:

  • Cobbling and tailoring
  • Vegetable sales
  • Hardware stores and canteens
  • Stationery sales

Impacts: In October 2008, Michael Nyangi was invited to address the United Nations on behalf of the poor. In the last year, the average daily wage of LOMORO’s members has risen over 200%, and the membership itself has more than doubled. LOMORO provides relatively small loans ($50), but that’s enough to start a small business and provide a way out of poverty.

Testimonial: The people of Kibera are yearning for change. Change cannot be realized if these people are not given time to express themselves and talk of the problems they are facing. – Michael Nyangi

Those who are poor are sidelined, and if you can involve them in participation, change can be realized. – Michael Nyangi addressing the United Nations.
