Friend in Leadership: Charles Owino

Partner since: August 2004

Statement of Purpose: To alleviate poverty and advocate, inform, and manage youth regarding HIV/AIDS in the Kayole and Matopeni slums.

Needs/Beneficiaries: Young people are at great risk of infection. YOCHAN educates them and provides opportunities to generate income and improve their lives.

Income-Generating Activities:

  • Prestige soap production
  • Peanut butter production

Impacts: YOCHAN has enabled dozens of young people to engage in income generating activities that provide them with money for their families and themselves. Real daily wages for its members have risen by 25% over the last year.

Testimonial: We want to start a barbershop. We want to start a potato-frying business. We need these activities to help young people work themselves out of poverty and to educate them about the scourge of HIV/AIDS. – Charles
