Statement of Purpose: To improve the quality of life of the infected and affected women and children in the community by providing care and support through economic empowerment. MOCASO helps every member gain financial independence by participating in the organization’s income generating projects, receiving entrepreneurship skills training and accessing micro-loans.
Needs/Beneficiaries: MOCASO works to combat the social stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, and provides a safe space for those infected and affected by the disease. By providing opportunities to access micro-loans and start businesses, MOCASO helps its members to lift themselves out of poverty.
Income Generating Activities:
- Powder soap and liquid detergent production
- Tie and dye (table cloths, curtains, bedsheets)
- Beadwork
- Tailoring, dressmaking, and embroidery
Impacts: MOCASO’s membership has almost tripled since early 2007. MOCASO serves over 400 adult members and 1200 children in the Pumwani neighborhood of Nairobi.
Testimonial: There are many reasons for MOCASO to exist. We are helping those whom others will not help – the infected and affected. We have many children here, some are orphans, others are not. We make it possible for people to make their own jobs, and to care for each other when they are sick. We are happy to work with The 1010 Project to provide hope and strong futures to our members and friends. – Joyce Kamondo
