The current drought and famine crisis in the Horn of Africa (Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti) directly impacts The 1010 Project’s friends and partners in Kenya. My heart aches when I think about the challenges that this brings to community leaders as they seek to serve and provide for the hundreds of kids at their schools and orphanages. My heart aches when I think about the hundreds of thousands of hungry stomachs, health issues, loss of hope – and even the loss of lives – resulting from the worst drought in the region in 60 years.

All of The 1010 Project’s US and Kenyan-based staff, interns, and board members are working collectively to better understand the situation and to think creatively and strategically about how we can best support our partners during this severe food shortage.

Many of our partner schools have been forced to close their doors for an extended period of time because they simply cannot afford to feed all of the children. The cost of food has more than quadrupled. Imagine if your family’s dinner cost went from $15 to $60 every single night for weeks and months on end. Now imagine you are responsible for feeding up to 300 children at these escalated prices! Keep in mind, these non-complaining kiddos eat only beans and ugali (a very plain tasting, pasty-textured, ground-up corn dish) day in and day out.

When I asked my Kenyan colleague Josephine to prepare a report of current needs, she estimated that $5000 would enable twelve of our partner organizations to feed 1000 children for a month!

Historically, due to our size and scope, The 1010 Project has not been in a position to provide emergency aid or food relief. Rather, as you may know, we focus on working alongside our partners to support them in their goals of becoming more self-sustainable. We provide access to loans or grants so our partners can start or expand long-term, sustainable, income-generating activities that enable their schools, orphanages, churches, HIV/AIDS support, and women’s empowerment organizations to be more financially secure so they can stand strong during difficult times such as this.

While many of our partner organizations have been extremely successful with their income-generating projects, most of them are not yet in a position to survive this food crisis without emergency aid. They have a concrete and monumental need, and we need to hear and respond to that need. Our current strategy is to connect our partners with larger emergency relief organizations. We are all working hard toward this end. In the meantime, one of our Kenyan advisory board members has organized a vegetable drive to provide food for at least one of our partner schools and we pray for other miraculous provision for other partners who remain in need.

Please join us in praying for and providing any assistance in the following:

Connections to larger relief organizations that can assist our partners with emergency funding to provide food for the children in their schools and orphanages.

Wisdom, encouragement and perseverance for the incredible, dedicated leaders of our partner community-based organizations.

Fortitude for the families of all the kids represented at these schools and churches and for the orphanages and safe houses.

The right amount of rain so that food will be grown and distributed in abundance.

May we have grateful hearts and generous pockets to share our abundance of food and blessings.

In a sweltering heat, there might be nothing finer than jumping in a pool of chilly water, or a cool breeze rustling through your hair as you pedal along a tree-lined road, or perhaps the feeling of a cold wet towel and a cup of ice water handed to you as you run (or walk) across a finish line. Yet, there is something even more gratifying: knowing that you are raising money for a great cause while doing so!

The annual “Your Cause Sports” event in Boulder provides the perfect opportunity for anyone to perform one, two, or even all three of these shining examples of athleticism while raising funds for the non-profit of their choice. Last fall, more than 30 people joined the E-Race Poverty Challenge Team, swimming, biking, and running their way to the finish line to raise awareness of and funds for The 1010 Project and our partners in Kenya.

Our bag pick up location

Some members of last year’s E-Race Poverty Challenge Team ran a 5K for the first time! Still others formed relay teams so they could do their favorite leg of the triathlon. Many used this as an opportunity to set a goal and train all summer to reach that goal. Tremendous determination, encouragement, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment were exuded by all.

The 1010 Project also made a huge splash at the awards ceremony, with one of the men’s relay teams taking first place and one of our women’s relay teams taking third. Best of all, our team raised over $4,000!

So how about it? Can you think of a better way to spend the Saturday of Labor Day weekend? With an afternoon start time, you don’t even have to wake up early! Cheering fans, free food and a beer garden await you at the finish line!

Melissa finishing the race

We invite you to join The 1010 Project’s E-Race Poverty Challenge Team! Register today! Here’s how: Head over to our E-RACE Poverty Challenge page and sign yourself up. We’ll email you what you need to register through Your Cause Sports along with information about our special team running shirts.

Can’t run, bike or swim this year? Join our team of supporters! Instead of paying a race registration fee, make that your donation to The 1010 Project! Your investment will go miles to help break the cycle of poverty!

Pardon my language, but it’s pretty darn exciting right now at The 1010 Project :). As we post video testimonies and stories of transformation from our Fall 2010 Academy, we are finalizing dates for the Spring 2011 GEA in Nairobi. Thanks to everyone who generously contributed to our year end fundraising push…our Spring GEA is fully funded!

Take an “inspiration break” and watch video highlights from our GEA graduation.

Some of the quotables:

Director of The GEA in Nairobi, Josephine: This is what I love doing, just to see people grow and become better in their lives.

Humble Hearts Founder & Director Beatrice Anuda: So many cobwebs are removed from our minds, so now we know how to budget. We know how to plan our money, we know how to market, and how to talk to those who come to our projects in a good way so they can come again.

GEA Mentor Phillips Katutu discusses what is NOT transformation, and then concludes that transformation comes when we integrate the faith and development initiatives.

Jeff Messer, Trustee for our Board of Directors, just returned from Kenya and wrote this article about the experience. He is also matching donations through Dec. 31 up to $1000 through his coaching business, The Entrepreneur’s Source. Invest today!

The mantra we heard continually as we spoke to partners and prospective partners alike was that they needed training. Many of the leaders of these CBOs (Community Based Organizations) are individuals with little or no business training. They have been called to the ministries they currently run and often lack the skills and basic business education needed to deal with these operations. I was constantly surprised by their ingenuity and resourcefulness given their circumstances but we heard time and time again, “if we just had training we could do so much more.” This theme was summarized by the comment of one leader: “Ours is not a poverty of resources but a poverty of information”…

That theme continued as we traveled up to the rural areas around Lake Victoria. There was probably no more impactful experience than the day we sat in a small rural church built from sticks, mud and manure, in front of about 80 men and women representing two community self help groups. Both had already begun their own micro-finance operations. We listened as they begged us to assist them to “drive away ignorance” with education and then provide them with resources to break the cycle of their poverty. Here were a group of women and men with the drive, ambition and desire to change their circumstance. They were not waiting on us. They had already taken steps to move beyond their situation. But they were boldly asking for the proverbial “hand up” not just a hand out. It was humbling and inspiring.

This season don’t give a gift, make an investment in ending the poverty of information.
